Cliff Island near Portland, Maine is shaped like a long bird, with a downward sloping wing.

Anchorage on the North Side

We anchored stayed in a protected area to the north of Cliff Island (see chart below, right.) So, there is plenty excellent protection from south and west winds. But be careful - there is a rocky area that peeps above the waterline at low and lurks just below at high tides - not to mention a rather nasty ledge. But between those areas there is lots of room to anchor. There were some 15 boats on the evening our visit with room to spare.

The beach area on the north face of Cliff is a good place for the family to stretch their legs and explore.

Take note: the north shore of Cliff Island has some residences so loud parties are best held elsewhere.

NOTE: We have not visited the rest of Cliff Island so this article will be a little short; if you have information to share of interest to boaters email it to rick@boatmaine.us or click on the edit > article link above and add it yourself.

A Beautiful Sunset

The photos speak for themselves! What a beautiful, beautiful sunset! These are the sights that we saw when anchored on the north end of Cliff Island.

We anchor along Cliff Island when Jewell island is too crowded. The article is right about the subsurface rocks. Be aware of them.
